Shenandoah Valley SWCD / Conservation Data Technician
The Shenandoah Valley Soil & Water Conservation District (SVSWCD) has an opening for a full time Conservation Data Technician. The positon is responsible for performing a wide range of technical duties that pertain to the implementation of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation (DCR-DSWC), activities, services and programs. The position will focus on providing help-desk support to application users, data management and GIS support to agricultural nonpoint source programs at DCR-DSWC. This position will also assist in the development and use of geospatial data to support the implementation of the nonpoint source programs within the Division. The position will also support maintenance of DCR-DSWC web content and assist with application training. This position will be based at the Department of Conservation and Recreation office in Richmond City, VA.
A Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, planning, or information systems is preferred but sufficient experience may substitute for a degree. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and proficient computer skills. Requirements for the position include experience in providing application support, data management and implementing data QA/QC procedures. Experience in Geographic Information Systems using ESRI products is preferred. The ideal applicant will also have knowledge and experience in areas of nonpoint source pollution control activities, hydrology, soils and water quality control, including Resource Management Planning, Conservation Planning, Nutrient Management Planning and/or Agricultural Best Management Practices. Applicants must have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to a variety of audiences. Applicants should have the ability to organize multiple projects, including complex and detailed information, in a professional, accurate and timely manner. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a background check. Hiring range: $45,000-$60,000 commensurate with experience and abilities and full benefits package.

Lord Fairfax SWCD / CONSERVATION SPECIALIST
The Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District headquartered in Strasburg in Shenandoah County, VA, is seeking a full-time Conservation Specialist. Responsibilities will include farmer contact, promotional efforts regarding Chesapeake Bay non-point nutrient reduction goals and the writing of contracts for the installation of related agricultural Best Management Practices. Applicants with a BS Degree in an agriculture or natural resources related field are preferred, but consideration will also be given to those with an Associates degree and equivalent agricultural experience. Work will be assigned within Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah and/or Warren Counties. Potential candidate must have knowledge of computers and Microsoft programs, be a self-starter and willing to work in a team environment. Must have excellent communication and organizational skills. Salary range is $40,000- 57,000, commensurate with knowledge and experience. Health, retirement and leave benefits provided. Work will require some use of employee’s own vehicle with work related mileage reimbursed at State rate. Valid Virginia driver’s license and vehicle liability insurance required.

Tazewell SWCD: Conservation Technician Temporary Part-Time Position (Not to exceed 30 hours weekly)
The Tazewell Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is looking for an individual to fill the position of Temporary Part-Time District Conservation Technician. The Conservation Technician’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, administering the Virginia Agricultural BMP Cost Share Program; assisting with outreach programs; managing current and future grants; and grant writing.
Duties include, but are not limited to, administering the Virginia Agricultural BMP Cost-Share Program; informing land users of available cost-share programs, both state and federal; assisting land users in application and maintenance of conservation practices by giving technical assistance; determining the need and feasibility of conservation practices; assisting in carrying out the information and education programs of the District; attending and participating in SWCD meetings as necessary; completing a monthly activities report; scheduling and conducting a continuing program of maintenance and follow up of applied BMP practices to ensure compliance with the Virginia BMP Cost-Share Program; overseeing, maintaining, and promoting the TSWCD equipment rental program; and willingness to pursue additional funding opportunities. The applicant must have knowledge of agricultural and environmental stewardship, layout and design of best management conservation practices, practice installation and supervision of construction, and the
AGBMP Tracking program. Applicants must have advanced computer skills and must be able to communicate both orally and in writing. Applicants will be required to earn all SWCD-related certifications.
This is a temporary part-time position, not to exceed 30 hours weekly and pay will be based on qualifications and experience. A valid driver’s license, background check and drug screening are required.
